The Functional Genomics Center Zurich (FGCZ) offers a position in the area of bioinformatics support and collaborative services with a focus on Next Generation Sequencing services including long read applications.
Project background
The Functional Genomics Center Zurich (FGCZ) is a joint core facility of ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich that applies the latest omics technologies for biomolecular research and personalized medicine. The FGCZ Genome Informatics group supports researchers with the processing, analysis and interpretation of next generation sequencing (NGS) data and supports applications like meta-genomics, meta-transcriptomics, de novo sequencing as well as epigenetics as well as single-cell and spatial applications. The team covers raw data processing, high-performance computing, statistical evaluation, interpretation, and integrated analysis. The team runs an excellent open source based software environment and establishes state-of-the-art data analysis concepts and algorithms.
Job description
We are seeking a bioinformatician that is highly proficient in NGS data analysis and has very good programming skills. A PhD degree in Bioinformatics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field is required. The ideal candidate is highly communicative, team-oriented and is enthusiastic about statistical and bioinformatics analysis of NGS and other omics. She/he is service-oriented and ready to keep up with the constant developments in the field. Advanced knowledge of English is essential as this is the working language. The candidate needs to have working experience with the Linux operating system and script-based NGS data analysis and bioinformatics. Experience with third-generation long read bioinformatics (PacBio or Oxford Nanopore) and a good understanding of principles and methods for sequence analysis is highly wanted.
As a member of the FGCZ Genome Informatics group, the candidate will perform bioinformatics analysis for ETH and UZH research groups, but also contribute to the development, administration and maintenance of the bioinformatics analysis environment at the FGCZ. The position is currently temporary, with a potential conversion into a permanent contract.
Profile
- PhD degree in bioinformatics or a related field
- Proficient in NGS data analysis with excellent scripting skills
- In-depth knowledge of R/Bioconductor and/or Python
- Working experience with GNU/Linux operating system
- Enthusiastic about statistical and bioinformatics data analysis
- Strong communication skills and a team-oriented approach
- Good understanding of biological research questions
- Service-oriented and adaptable to the evolving field of bioinformatics
- Advanced proficiency in English
