Engineering Postdoc Opening for Using High-density CMOS Microelectrode Arrays with Retinal Preparations and Optogenetics
100%, Basel, fixed-term
In the framework of an SNF-funded project, titled “Restoring high-resolution vision using optogenetics”, explanted human retinae will be investigated and recorded from by means of CMOS-based high density microelectrode arrays (HD-MEAs). The overall goal of this project is to combine advanced optical methods for light-stimulus shaping with high-spatiotemporal-resolution electrophysiology and cutting-edge genetic targeting strategies in an effort to restore high-resolution vision in patients. Light and holographic stimulation will be used to trigger the optogenetics on preparations directly atop the CMOS chips.
Job description
Therefore, it will be necessary to develop technologies and methods to minimize or avoid light-induced artifacts on the HD-MEAs, to establish and program a setup and software for high-throughput retinal recordings, to conduct the respective measurements, as well as to further develop the data-evaluation and signal-analysis pipeline.
The work will be performed in close collaboration with electrical engineers and neurobiologists. A broad spectrum of state-of-the art engineering and testing equipment, software and computers, as well as cell-culture and biological facilities are available in the group.
Profile
To work on this highly interdisciplinary project, a suitable candidate should have a solid background in microfabrication. Further, experience with experimental setups, large-scale data acquisition and analysis, FPGA programming skills, and knowledge of Python and C++ are important assets. The project is highly interdisciplinary (microtechnology/electronics/biology) and requires good communication skills and a proactive work attitude. The candidate must be able to fluently communicate in English (oral and written) and be willing to work and take over responsibility in a highly interactive international environment with other Postdocs and PhD students. Moreover, the candidate will also be involved in project management and grant acquisition.
The position is planned for up to 3 years.
