PhD position in Planetary Core Dynamics
100%, Zurich, fixed-term
The Earth and Planetary Magnetism Group (EPM) invites applications to undertake a PhD on the hydrodynamics of planetary cores and subsurface oceans in the presence of topography at the boundary.
Project background
This project aims to investigate the effects of topography on the fluid dynamics of deep fluid layers under the influence of rapid planetary rotation. In particular we aim to understand the resulting flows near the topography and investigate how perturbations are radiated into the fluid. Ultimately, this will enable us to assess the resulting torque and energy dissipation within the fluid layer, two key parameters for understanding the orbital dynamics and the evolution of planets as a whole.
Job description
The successful candidate will run numerical models and lab experiments to simulate fluid flow over topography in a rapidly rotating environment. The experimental part of the project will be performed on a rotating platform in the Flow lab of the EPM group, and Velocimetry measurements using Particle Image Velocimetry and Ultrasonic Doppler Velocimetry will allow to quantitatively assess the flow in the vicinity of the 3D-printed topography. The lab results will be complemented by time resolved 3D velocity fields from numerical simulations of the flow using the spectral element code Nek.
Profile
- Applicants should hold a MSc in geophysics, physics or engineering, ideally with a MSc thesis in fluid dynamics or any related field
- Experience with lab work and/or numerical simulations is a great advantage
- Sound knowledge of the English language, both oral and written
