Team Head Global Security
The Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich is a center of competence for Swiss and international security policy. It offers security policy expertise in research, teaching, and consultancy.
The Global Security Team is one of four teams of the Think Tank at CSS and focuses on two areas. It works on military issues, including doctrine, technology, strategy, and conflict, and also analyzes the geopolitical landscape, with special focus on East Asia and the United States.
You will manage a team of 6-7 researchers and senior researchers working on military and geopolitical topics. You will contribute to CSS publications and play a key role in the editorial processes for the CSS publication series "Strategic Trends" and "Policy Perspectives." In addition, you will organize CSS events for policymakers and for members of the broader public interested in security policy. You will cultivate relationships with CSS partners in Bern. You will write for international publications and maintain a public profile through activities such as lectures and media contributions. Ideally, you will be able to start in March 2020.
You have several years of experience in a Think Tank, preferably in a leading position. You also have extensive knowledge of international security policy. Our preferred areas of expertise are:
- US foreign and security policy; or
- The intersection between international politics and international economics
You must have a degree in political science or related disciplines - preferably with a doctorate - and excellent analytical skills. Knowledge of Swiss security policy and the Swiss political landscape is an advantage.
The CSS is a multi-lingual working environment, so proficiency in English alongside at least one other Swiss national language (German, French, or Italian) is required. Work experience in international organizations or Think Tanks would also be an advantage.
We look forward to receiving your online application including a letter of interest explaining the skills and motivation you would bring to the post, a CV and one to two single-authored writing samples (e.g. an academic article, or policy brief) no later than January 27. Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.
We offer you an exciting opportunity to develop and showcase your expertise in a Think Tank that is both university based and close to the policy-making environment in Bern. Career development is a core element of our culture. Further information about the Centre for Security Studies can be found on our website www.css.ethz.ch.
