(Senior) Researcher Cyberdefense

80%-100%, Zurich, temporary

The Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich is a center of competence for Swiss and international security policy. It offers security policy expertise in research, teaching, and consultancy.

Project background

Within the Risk and Resilience team of the think tank at CSS, the Cyberdefense Project analyses security and military policy developments in cyberspace and advises the Swiss federal authorities on the political, economic, social and technological implications of these developments. Thematically, this includes developments and concepts of cyber weapons, questions of international norms and their effects, technological developments in general, and developments in intelligence culture, among others.

Job description

We are looking for a highly motivated cyber-security policy expert with a strong grasp of the intersection between technological development and security politics. The successful candidate will have an interest or direct experience in the Swiss security and defense political environment. As part of our Risk and Resilience Team, you will conduct applied research on emerging cyber-security and -defense issues. You will publish your findings in policy relevant and scientific publications, and will disseminate your knowledge through dialogue with policy-makers and other relevant stakeholders.

Your profile

You have an MA degree or PhD (or will be close to completion) in the social sciences or closely related fields. You should be familiar with cyber-security issues, in particular with respect to their implications for security and defense policy. Technical IT or computer security skills would be an asset.

The CSS is a multi-lingual working environment, so proficiency in English alongside at least one other Swiss national language is required. Work experience in international organisations or think tanks would be an advantage, as is knowledge of the Swiss political landscape.
