Proteome Informatics Expert (Bioinformatician/Data Scientist)

The Functional Genomics Center Zurich (FGCZ) is a joint research and technology center of ETH Zurich and University of Zurich that applies latest omics technologies for biomolecular and personalized medicine research. The FGCZ proteome informatics team supports researchers in the analysis and interpretation of mass spectrometry-related data. Within that field, the team covers raw data processing, high-performance computing, statistical evaluation, interpretation, and integrated analysis. The team runs commercial and open source-based software environments and establishes algorithmic solutions and pipelines for data processing and analysis. An integral part of the work is integrating the data into our data management system and ensuring reproducibility of the analysis.

Job description

You will support the FGCZ proteomics user community by maintaining existing and developing new mass spectrometric data processing and analysis pipelines. In this role, you will apply your expertise in informatics and data science to ensure the reproducibility of the data analysis performed. As a member of the FGCZ proteome informatics group, you will have back office as well as user desk tasks to support our collaborators of ETH and University of Zurich with data interpretation and bioinformatics project support. Employment will be at ETH Zurich, the position is available immediately.

Your profile

The ideal candidate is a team player, has a background in bioinformatics ideally in the field of mass spectrometry, a proven track record of writing and maintaining code, and an academic degree in any of the relevant areas, including (but not limited to) computer science, statistics, or biology. Candidates with a Ph.D. and publication record are welcome to apply. Familiarity with the management and analysis of large-scale datasets is considered an advantage. In particular, experience with proteomics data or other functional genomics data will be a plus. Necessary skills with the Microsoft Windows and Linux operating system, including the command line, are essential while experience with virtualization tools, e.g., Docker, is of advantage. Furthermore, practical knowledge of at least one programming language (C++, C#, Java, Python) and tools as scripting languages and Git are mandatory. Experience in R/Bioconductor, client-side web programming are considered an advantage. The ability to work independently is a prerequisite, as is the ability to effectively interact with the research and technical staff of the center and external research groups in a team-oriented manner. Advanced knowledge of English is essential, as this is the working language of the center.
