The Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) is located in Basel, a European hotspot for biomedical research, in close proximity of the University of Basel, the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research and the pharmaceutical and biotech industry.

The Computational Biology (CoBi) Group focuses on image-based modelling and simulation of developmental processes with applications in bioengineering.

Job description

The PhD student will focus on using mathematical modeling based on quantitative data to uncover fundamental mechanism in development - the detailed project will be defined together with the student to match his/her interests.

The position is available immediately; the exact starting date can be negotiated. The working language is English. The salary and general working conditions are internationally highly competitive and according to ETH standards.

Your profile

Candidates should hold a Master degree in Bioengineering / Physics / Applied Mathematics or related disciplines and have an interest in mathematical modelling of biological systems. Familiarity with differential equations, chemical reaction kinetics, principles of mechanics and fluid dynamics, as well as a programming language are essential for this position. Prior experience with biological systems is preferred, but the biological background can also be learned on the project.
