Postdoc Position on Valorization of Agricultural Waste for Novel Building Materials
100%, Zurich, fixed-term
This PostDoc position is offered by the Wood Materials Science group (D-BAUG, Institute for Building Materials).
Project background
Agricultural waste production is an inevitable consequence of global farming practices, resulting in substantial residual biomass worldwide. Many of these by-products are still underutilized for energy use or treated as waste, which can cause environmental issues. In a bilateral international project between Switzerland and Vietnam funded by SNSF-NAFOSTED, we aim to develop sustainable approaches to better utilize agricultural waste, focusing on rice husk and rice straw, widely available in Vietnam.
Job description
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will contribute to the development of innovative, biodegradable lignocellulose-based panels derived from rice straw and rice husks to promote sustainable resource use. Key responsibilities include:
- Researching material formulations and chemical treatments to optimize panel performance
- Performing material processing and physical/chemical analyses
- Publishing high-quality scientific papers
- Undertaking a three-month research visit at our partner institute in Hanoi, Vietnam (Research Institute of Forest Industry (RIFI))
The initial contract is for two years, with the possibility of an extension. The position is expected to start in April 2025 or upon mutual agreement.
Profile
We are seeking a highly motivated, creative, independent, and communicative individual with the following qualifications:
- Doctorate in materials science, chemistry, engineering, or a related field
- Strong experience in chemical treatments, material formulations, processing techniques, and analytical methods
- Prior experience with biomass utilization and processing is advantageous but not mandatory
