Student assistant – Forest models review

The chair of Forest Resources Management (FORM) is seeking a motivated student to assist in the development of a review of forest dynamics models. Are you passionate about forest management, modeling, or ecological data analysis? Join our team for a focused review of forest dynamics models as part of an exciting research initiative. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in forest modeling, literature review, data organization, and coding.

Job description

You will contribute to the identification and evaluation of models that simulate tree and forest growth, regeneration, and mortality, with a primary focus on Central European forests. Specifically, you will:

  • Conduct a comprehensive literature review to identify relevant models.
  • Organize and document findings in a structured database.
  • Extract and analyze model equations, detailing their variables and parameters.
  • Use tools like Zotero for reference management and contribute to an R-based repository of model formulations.

Profile

  • A motivated MSc student with an interest in forest modeling, or data management. Ongoing enrollment at ETH or in a Swiss University is a pre-condition.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Experience with literature reviews; familiarity with R and reference management software (e.g., Zotero) is a plus.

We offer

  • Estimated workload: 6-10 hours per week for 3–4 months.

You will:

  • Develop expertise in forest dynamics and forest ecosystem modeling.
  • Gain hands-on experience with research tools and data organization.
  • Contribute to impactful research addressing global challenges in forest management.
  • Work closely with researchers in a collaborative and supportive environment.
