PhD position - Electric discharge drilling and electrochemical machining
100%, Zurich, fixed-term
The Wire EDM process is a highly precise manufacturing technique that involves using electrical sparks to cut through conductive materials, and it requires strong electromagnetic interference considerations and requirements during the machine assembly and grounding process.
The Institute of Machine Tools and Manufacturing (IWF) is seeking a highly motivated full-time Research Assistant with a background in Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Automation, or a closely related field, to join our team.
You will have the opportunity to work on an exciting project involving the creation of a custom Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) machine for basic experimental research, with the aim of implementing AI learning algorithms for process control. Furthermore, there will be ample potential for career growth and development within the institute, including the possibility of pursuing a PhD.
Job description
As a Research Assistant, you will be responsible for formalizing the electrical diagram, writing documentation, assembling, and wiring the machine while ensuring electrical safety standards are met. You will work closely with the project team to ensure the project is completed on time and within budget. In addition, you will have the opportunity to work on related projects and develop new skills and expertise.
In addition to the main project, the successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work on the development of a custom electric pulse generator for EDM. Furthermore, there will be ample potential for career growth and development within the institute, including the possibility of pursuing a PhD.
Your duties will also be:
- Formalize the electrical diagram for the custom Wire EDM machine using Electrical CAD software
- Write clear and concise documentation for the electrical diagram and wire labelling for the machine
- Assemble and wire the machine while ensuring electrical safety standards are met
- Troubleshoot and debug any electrical issues that may arise during the assembly process
- Design control frameworks for the Wire EDM machine and assist in implementing AI learning algorithms for process control
- Collaborate with experts in the field to develop your skills and advance your career
- Assist in the development of a custom electric pulse generator for Wire EDM
- Conduct experimental research, collect and analyze data, and assist in the preparation of research reports and publications
Your profile
- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Automation, or a closely related field, or a Bachelor's degree with relevant experience
- Strong knowledge of Electrical Design and experience with wiring and assembly of electrical systems while guaranteeing electrical safety
- Familiarity with electrical CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical) for creating schematics, layouts, and manufacturing files
- Ability to work with electrical test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and function generators
- Strong attention to detail and ability to write clear and concise documentation
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong technical skills and an interest in learning about new technologies and techniques
- Excellent writing and communication skills in English
