Research Assistant / Pairwise Comparison of Subvectors in a Large Number of Matrices
10%-30%, Zurich, fixed-term
The chair pursues research mainly in the areas of applied international and public economics and in applied econometrics. Research output is disseminated mainly via two channels: presentations at international conferences and workshops and publications in leading academic journals in economics.
Project background
We have fully vectorized data of a large number of musical scores. Each score is represented by a matrix. The goal is to pairwise compare n-grams (snippets of fixed size) between all these scores to establish similarity scores for all pairs of pieces.
Job description
The data size is very large, and one needs to approach the problem in a simplified (condensed) way:
- Consider the most relevant columns in a piece (to be specified based on an informed guess).
- Consider random parts of pieces (or parts of the parts of pieces) rather than the full matrix.
- Assess the quality of the “simplified’’ approach using a small set of complete score comparisons.
Profile
We look for a student with proficiency in both C++ or RUST as well as Python.
Python routines exist already to do the mentioned tasks for full matrices, but the following needs to be considered:
- The routines need to be adjusted to conduct the approach based on random snippets in selected data.
- Python is slow and C++ or RUST would be much faster.
