(Senior) Researcher Military Conflict/Doctrine/Technology
The Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich is a center of competence for Swiss and international security policy. It offers security policy expertise in research, teaching, and consultancy.
The Global Security Team of the think tank at CSS focuses on two areas. It works on military issues, including doctrine, technology, strategy, and conflicts, and also analyzes the evolving geopolitical landscape, with a special focus on East Asia and the United States.
You will contribute to the CSS Think Tank’s research, publications, workshops and political consultancy concerning military security issues. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in trends in military conflict, military doctrine, military technology and/or arms procurement. You will publish your findings in policy relevant and scientific publications, and will disseminate your knowledge through dialogue with policy-makers and other relevant stakeholders. Ideally, you would be able to join as soon as possible.
You have excellent knowledge of the military aspect of international security studies. You have an M.A. or a Ph.D. in Political Science or a related discipline, preferably with a background in International Security, Strategic Studies, Military Studies, or Intelligence Studies. You possess excellent analytical, writing and presentation skills.
The CSS is a multi-lingual working environment, so proficiency in English alongside at least one Swiss national language (German, French, or Italian) is required. Work experience in international organizations or think tanks would be an advantage, as is knowledge of the Swiss political landscape.
We look forward to receiving your online application including a letter of interest explaining the skills and motivation you would bring to the post, a CV and one to two single-authored writing samples (e.g. an academic article, or policy brief) no later than 27.01.2020. Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.
We offer you an exciting opportunity to develop and showcase your expertise in a think tank that is both university based and close to the policy-making environment in Bern. Career development is core element of our culture. Further information about the Centre for Security Studies can be found on our website www.css.ethz.ch. For questions about the position, please contact Dr. Oliver Thränert, Head of Think Tank, by tel. +41 44 632 6031 or email: email@example.com (no applications).
