PhD Positions in Stimuli-Responsive Organometallic Chemistry
100%, Zurich, fixed-term
The Bezdek Group applies the tools and approaches of organic/inorganic/organometallic chemistry to synthesize molecules and materials with stimuli-responsive (sensory) and energy storage function. The targeted chemistry spans organic molecules, transition metal complexes and carbon nanomaterials.
Job description
The foci of the PhD projects are to:
- Design and execute new synthetic routes to organic molecules, transition metal complexes and functionalized carbon nanomaterials.
- Gain insight into the electronic structures, magnetic/thermochemical properties of newly synthesized materials using a suite of spectroscopic techniques (NMR, EPR, IR, UV-Vis, Raman, XPS), crystallography (single-crystal, powder) and electrochemistry.
- Apply the molecules/materials as energy storage media or as selective sensing elements.
Throughout the course of the projects, students will gain proficiency in synthesizing and characterizing organic/inorganic molecules and nanomaterials in addition to acquiring hands-on experience in energy storage/sensor device fabrication and testing. Consequently, students will bring multiple areas of expertise to bear in order to solve problems and will receive a highly multidisciplinary education.
Profile
We are looking for someone with a M.Sc. degree or equivalent in chemistry or related area and a background in synthetic chemistry. Exceptional candidates holding B.Sc. degrees will also be considered. Any previous experience in air- and moisture-free manipulations (ie. Schlenk technique, glovebox operations) and electrochemistry are an advantage but not essential.
Above all, we are seeking highly motivated and enthusiastic scientists who thrive in collaborative working environments, enjoy taking on challenges, learning new skills, critical thinking and problem solving. Fluent communication skills in English (oral and written) are essential, as is a willingness to work as part of a highly interactive, international, and diverse team.
A note: research indicates that women and individuals from marginalized groups tend to apply only when they meet all of the criteria. If you believe you’re qualified, but don’t necessarily check every box, please submit an application.
