Postdoc Position in RF/mm-Wave Power Amplifier and Transmitter Designs

100%, Zurich, permanent

The Integrated Devices, Electronics, And Systems (IDEAS) Group of ETH Zurich invite applications for a postdoctoral associate position in the field of integrated RF/mm-Wave power amplifiers and transmitters using the state-of-the-art compound semiconductor (e.g., GaN) and silicon technologies for next-generation wireless communication and sensing.

The ETH IDEAS Group, led by Prof. Hua Wang, is a world-leading research group in the field of integrated circuits and systems for next-generation wireless communication, sensing, and various emerging technology applications.

One of our major research focuses is RF/mm-Wave integrated circuits and systems as well as Front-End Modules (FEMs). In particular, the ETH IDEAS group has a long and successful research track record on a wide variety of RF/mm-Wave power amplifiers and transmitters to advance their capabilities of output power, energy efficiency, bandwidth, linearity, and reconfigurability. Our past postdoc members and doctoral students regularly publish at flagship conferences and journals and have found excellent jobs in top universities and industries.

The ETH IDEAS Group is part of the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (D-ITET). More information can be found on the group website (

This postdoc position lasts a minimum of two years, possibly extending to the third year.

Project background

The 5G wireless systems have resulted in substantial growth in research, development, and deployment of RF/mm-Wave electronic systems and antenna arrays at various scales. The vision and promises of beyond-5G/6G further push the wireless research frontier into the Sub-THz regime. In these 5G/6G applications, the frontend power amplifiers and transmitters typically govern the output power, energy efficiency, sensitivity, linearity, and reliability of the entire wireless systems, while the ubiquitous deployment of array-based systems poses stringent requirements on their form factor, thermal handling, and cost.

The overarching aim of the project is to innovate power amplifier and transmitter concepts, architectures, and designs at 5G/6G RF/mm-Wave frequencies for joint wireless communication and sensing applications. The project will use state-of-the-art compound semiconductor (e.g., GaN) and silicon technologies to radically advance the capabilities of integrated power amplifiers and transmitters.

This postdoc position is jointly funded by an industry consortium with world-leading international corporations as well as ETH Zurich's internal funding. The research involves close collaborations with industry engineering groups in the United States and Japan.
