PhD Position in Data-Driven Nonlinear Model Reduction

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Chair in Nonlinear Dynamics at ETH Zürich is seeking a highly motivated PhD student in the area of data-driven model-reduction for high-dimensional nonlinear physical problems.

Project background

The succesful candidate will work on the application and extension of data-driven nonlinear model reduction based on the recent theory of spectral submanifolds (SSMS). SSM-reduction is a dynamical-systems-based alternative to data-based system modeling via neural networks. SSM-based modeling provides explicit and predictive polynomial ODE models for the observed dominant dynamics of nonlinear systems. A nontechnical introduction can be found under here, whereas a more technical introdution is available from here.

Job description

The objective of the position is to work within a Swiss-French consortium of academic institutions to solve challenging model reduction problems using SSM-reduction and compare this approach with other model reductin methods, such as dynamic mode decompostion (DMD) or neural network-based methods. The level of the targeted problems will  require further mathematical and algorithmic developments over the current state of data-driven SSM reduction. The PhD position will be based either within the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering or the Department of Mathematics at ETH Zurich, dependinhg on the candidate's background and preferences.

Profile

A masters degreee in mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, or physics is required. A strong background in analysis and linear algebra (evidenced by strong undergraduate- and master-level grades in these subjects) is a must. Exprience with large-scale computations and data handling is required. Some bakground in nonlinear dynamical systems is also expected. The candidate must have excellent communication skills in English (oral and writing) and must be willing to work in an international team environment.
