PhD-student or Postdoc Opening for Nano- and Microstructuring of Electrodes of High-density CMOS Microelectrode Array Systems
The Bio Engineering Laaboratory at the Department Biosystems Science and Engineering is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic PhD student or Postdoc with expertise in nano- or microtechnological facbrication, who will want to work in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment in Basel, Switzerland.
In the framework of an SNF-funded project, arrays of thousands of nano- and/or micro-scale-structured electrodes need to be developed that enable intracellular or “in-cell” access to neuronal signals. The overall platform will consist of a sophisticated CMOS microelectrode-array system that includes, besides the specific electrode structures, all circuitry that is needed to (i) record and condition neuronal signals and (ii) stimulate and potentially electroporate neuronal cells.
To gain intracellular access, a variety of electrode structures, such as mushroom-like structures, needles, volcanoes, or other protruding nano-scale structures need to be developed and tested. All structures need to be realized in their final form in large arrays on fully processed CMOS wafers (180-nm technology).
The work will be performed in close collaboration with electrical engineers and biologists. A state-of-the art microtechnological cleanroom, a broad spectrum of engineering and testing equipment, as well as cell-culture and biological facilities are available in the group and Department.
To work on this highly interdisciplinary project, a suitable candidate should have a solid background in nano- and microengineering, and experience in cleanroom fabrication processes is mandatory. Furthermore, programming skills and knowledge of simulation tools and Labview are important assets. The project is highly interdisciplinary (microtechnology/electronics/biology) and will require good communication skills and a proactive work attitude. The candidate must be able to fluently communicate in English (oral and written) and be willing to work and take over responsibility in a highly interactive international environment with other PhD students. Postdocs will also be involved in project management and acquisition of national and international grants.
The position is planned for 4 years (PhD) or 2-3 years (Postdoc).
