Data Management and General IT Support Specialist

In the “Bedretto Underground Laboratory for Geoenergies” at ETH Zurich (, a team of ambitious and fast-moving scientists studies, in close collaboration with national and international partners, techniques and procedures for a safe, efficient, and sustainable use of geothermal heat. This includes extensive and novel in-situ measurement programs on the impact of drilling, fluid injections, and temperature changes in natural rock. To support the scientists of the Rock-Lab team, we are looking for a Data Management and General IT Support Specialist.

Job description

In this position, you will design and implement the real-time transfer of petabytes of measurement data from the lab’s tunnel site in Val Bedretto to ETH Zurich, conduct data quality and completeness monitoring, format conversions, data versioning as well as archiving. You will keep the records of the instrumentation metadata (response) and configuration, as well as support the Bedretto team in questions of workplace computing and networking. In these tasks, you will tightly cooperate with the team of scientists, but you will also be backed up and supported by the IT team of the Swiss Seismological Service, which is engaged in similar tasks on a national rather than a lab scale.

Your profile

For this responsible and diverse position we are looking for a motivated, service-oriented IT generalist – e.g. with a professional education in ICT (general profile or system technology), a degree in IT or natural science, or comparable education and experience. You have good knowledge of at least two operating systems (including Linux), at least two programming languages (including python), proven experience in managing measurement data (best including signal processing), and networking. The position requires excellent interpersonal skills, a high level of responsibility and a strong willingness to grow on the job.

The position is offered on a one year contract with the possibility for an extension of up to 5 years.
