PhD position: Ovarian Follicle Growth Dynamics: 3D Colored Power Doppler Imaging in Heifers (PROSPECT-study)

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

ETH Zurich is one of the world’s leading universities specializing in science and technology. At the Institute of Agricultural Science, the Animal Physiology Group addresses challenges including new approaches for studying reproductive physiology using livestock and wildlife species models.

Project background

Ultrasound technologies are routinely used both in fertility clinics and in veterinary diagnostics. More recent 3D and 4D approaches coupled with colored doppler ultrasonography applications including colored Power doppler for blood flow estimation in small vessels are developing. Human and bovine follicle maturation processes largely share similarities. Using cattle as model for human follicle growth dynamics, the goal of this interdisciplinary project is to improve the outcome of ovarian hormonal stimulation.

Job description

The interdisciplinary PROSPECT-study funded by PHRT (Personalized Health and Related Technologies) comprises the characterisation of ovarian follicle growth dynamics in heifers. The study will include a new improved and automatized computational image analysis of 3D sonographic scans produced over the course of natural and stimulated cycles for mathematical modelling purposes.

Your profile

You are an early experienced, highly motivated young researcher with a strong enthusiasm to conduct cutting-edge research in the interdisciplinary field of ultrasound imaging in the context of bovine reproductive physiology. You have completed a degree in veterinary medicine, biology or a related discipline. Profound experience with bovine gynecologic ultrasonography in 2D and/or 3D is required. Furhtermore, you have the ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary research environment. Very good knowledge of spoken and written English is essential.
