Post-Doc Position: Bio-Image Analysis
100%, Basel, fixed-term
ETH Zurich is a world-leading university dedicated to advancing science, engineering, and technology. The position is embedded in the Computational Biology (CoBi) group headed by Prof. Iber, which leverages imaging data to develop data-driven, mechanistic models of biological processes. The team employs cutting-edge computational tools and imaging techniques to investigate complex biological systems, translating image-derived insights into mechanistic models that enhance our understanding of tissue dynamics, disease progression, and cellular behavior. The Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) of ETH Zurich is located in Basel, a European hotspot for biomedical research, in close proximity to the University of Basel, as well as the pharmaceutical and biotech industry.
Project background
We seek a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to develop and apply advanced image analysis techniques. The focus of this position is on integrating both classical image processing techniques and modern machine learning approaches to extract meaningful quantitative information from complex biological images. The successful candidate will contribute to projects involving diverse imaging modalities, including lightsheet microscopy, CT imaging, and ultrasound imaging. In addition, the candidate will actively collaborate with colleagues developing mechanistic models based on the extracted image data.

- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, ensuring seamless integration of image analysis with mechanistic modeling
- Contribute to software development for reproducible and user-friendly image analysis workflows
- Write and publish high-impact research articles in peer-reviewed journals
- Present results at international conferences and within collaborative networks
Profile
- PhD in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field
- Proven expertise in image analysis (e.g., segmentation, denoising, feature extraction), including both classical techniques and AI-based approaches
- Proficiency in Python and experience with tools like napari, scikit-image, OpenCV, and Pytorch
- Familiarity with diverse imaging modalities (lightsheet microscopy, CT, ultrasound) is highly desirable
- Strong programming skills and experience with collaborative software development (e.g., Git)
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work in interdisciplinary teams
- Interest in bridging image analysis with mechanistic modeling
