Research Assistant on Misinformation in Education: Conducting and Coding Interviews

The group for Research on Learning and Instruction at ETH Zurich strives to discover effective, evidence-based ways to improve educational practice with an eye towards generalizable principles across content areas and issues of societal relevance.

Project background

The group is looking for a research assistant who will support members of the group in their research, including data collection and analysis. Currently, we are looking for someone to assist with a specific project, but we are open (and would welcome) to collaborate beyond this project. 

The specific project that you would support is investigating the creation of misinformation in education. This project uses data collection through interviews with teachers and school leaders in Switzerland and the UK. You would be responsible for conducting the Switzerland-based interviews, as well as qualitative coding of both the UK- and Switzerland-based interviews. Compensation will be CHF 30.70 per hour, up to 15 hours per week (during the semester). 

Job description

  • Conduct 60-90 minute interviews in Swiss German and/or High German with teachers and school leaders about situations in which they create misinformation (using a predefined semi-structured interview protocol)
  • Review interview transcriptions/translations to ensure accuracy
  • Collaborate with PI to refine interview protocol/questions as needed
  • Code interview transcripts (using a predefined codebook)
  • Collaborate with PI to refine codebook as needed

Profile

Required

  • You speak Swiss German, High German, and English (C1/C2 level)
  • You have prior experience with conducting interviews
  • You have prior experience with qualitative coding of data
  • You have prior work experience in academic research
  • You are interested in understanding data use in educational contexts
  • You are motivated to learn about research methods in learning sciences/education research
  • You are a student at ETH or UZH (in any field)

Preferred

  • You have prior experience working within education (e.g., as a teacher, school administrator), particularly at the high school/gymnasium level
  • You have prior experience with qualitative data analysis or data collection
