Swiss Data Science Center - Head of Communication

The Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC) is a joint venture between EPFL and ETH Zurich.

Its mission is to accelerate the adoption of data science and machine learning techniques within the ETH Domain academic disciplines, the Swiss academic community at large, and the industrial sector. In particular, it addresses the gap between those who create data, those who develop data analytics and systems, and those who could potentially extract value from it.

The centre comprises a multi-disciplinary team of data and computer scientists, and experts in select domains with offices in Zürich, Lausanne, and Villigen.

 

Project background

The Swiss Data Science Center is looking for a Head of Communications who will develop, lead and manage internal and external communications for the Swiss Data Science Center, support its expansion and strengthen its positioning nationally and internationally .

Job description

Main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Define a communication strategy in line with the overall SDSC objectives, including clear objectives and KPIs.
  • Plan, manage, and implement an effective communications program to achieve strategic objectives.
  • Develop creative communications initiatives to broaden awareness of the SDSC, strengthen its identity, and develop related messaging. 
  • Manage and produce content for a variety of communication platforms including website, and social networks; identify and implement new communications channels.
  • Lead and execute key academic and industry events, formulating the strategy, writing press releases, preparing press materials, identifying editorial targets, and securing coverage.
  • Proactively handle and develop media relations; draft media briefings where appropriate, ensuring accuracy and consistency of messaging.
  • Support editorial efforts of SDSC team members including writing white papers, blog posts, project descriptions, video scripts, and any other material for target audiences. 
  • Identify and work with agencies/freelancers for specific communication products such as video, print products, etc.
  • Collaborate with partners in the business world as well as in academic and scientific circles to build and strengthen relationships and ensure SDSC’s visibility.
  • Leverage communication opportunity within the ETH domain, especially with ETHZ and EPFL.
  • Oversee and strengthen the internal communication strategies within a team of 100-200 members to foster transparency, enhance team collaboration, and ensure alignment with the SDSC's vision and objectives.
  • Edit reports (including annual report) and any material pertaining to the strategic positioning of the SDSC.

 

Your profile

  • You are a strategic thinker, an effective communicator and , possess a strong entrepreneurial spirit with a can-do attitude. 
  • You are a self-starter, autonomous, proactive, and have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • You have a genuine, proven interest (and some experience) in science and technology.
  • You are eager to support the development of a national research center with strong ties to the business world.
  • You hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree in communications or related field.
  • You have at least 3 years of experience in communication or related field.
  • You have outstanding writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • You are perfectly fluent in German and English, both written and spoken and speak French.
  • You have experience with and understanding of the media landscape and the ability to develop new press contacts.
  • You can work collaboratively with a range of internal and external partners, in different locations, developing and sustaining effective working relationships.
  • You can work positively as part of a team whilst demonstrating leadership skills.
